Hope exists in Mathare
It is especially difficult to describe the hope that springs from a few unique people in Mathare. Not because the desolation is everywhere in the valley and its just easier to come up with more adjectives to describe the wretched living conditions, but because of the intense conviction of the people fighting to live.
Mathare Roots is helping people live
I’ve never witnessed it before. Competitiveness? Struggling to succeed? Fear of dying? Not even close to the strength that the people who have a lust for Living have showed me first hand - in the slums. I won’t insult them by suggesting I understand what I see in their eyes, but I imagine it is the very few whose will is so strong it cannot be extinguished by all the bleeding in the world. It is not that their convictions are forged in despair. Their energy is palpable. These personalities are everywhere in the Mathare Roots Youth Group. This group is an inspiration to ANYONE struggling with ANY personal problem. As such, we will make their story of compassion for the youth of Mathare known. Their work is critical if this valley is ever going to overcome its current situation since over half of all the people living here are under 20 years old.
Phoebe, age 16, chooses to live
“The people here work day and night to generate money. They always stand for each other in times of problems by contributing whatever small thing they have. Even though I want a bright future and want to change the living environment, I will never forget my beautiful beginning in Mathare. It’s exciting to have friends who have experienced life and know the meaning of living and success. If only Mathare had a clean environment I would not have complained… Life is what you have and see, it is what you are given at a time. Life is an experience that passes like the wind. So no matter where you are, you can choose what life you want.”
